The media and the ideologies of society have forced many women to feel fat, ugly, and unattractive, triggering very serious eating disorders...
For fear of gaining weight, and being criticized or judged by society, these women begin to have a distorted perception of their weight, so they choose to stop eating, without realizing that they are threatening their own lives.
The reality is that they still have an appetite, however, they are willing to make sacrifices in order to look slim. Sometimes, they usually control the consumption of calories, they can vomit after eating or use laxatives or diuretics to continue losing weight. Even to lose weight they join a gym to over-exercise.
Their weight becomes an obsession and even if they have achieved their goal they will never be satisfied and will look at themselves in the mirror seeing themselves as obese and ugly. The problem with anorexia nervosa is not really food, but the way in which people are destroyed by the misconception of their physical appearance.
Red lights: Alert
It is somewhat complicated to discover when a person suffers from anorexia nervosa, since sometimes these women tend to have a few extra pounds, or tend to hide their thinness under their clothing; They even tend to throw the food or vomit it after eating it and thus avoid being discovered.
However, there are very noticeable physical symptoms such as excessive weight loss, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness or fainting, thin or brittle hair, absence of menstruation, dry skin, intolerance to colds, low blood pressure, and dehydration, among others.
It is important to be alert to these symptoms since anorexia nervosa is not a game, and we must help these people to receive adequate treatment.
How do people with anorexia nervosa act?
This condition is merely emotional and behavioral because as we mentioned before, it is a false perception of body weight. So in order to help these people we must observe some behaviors, such as:
1. They say they have no appetite
People with anorexia nervosa will often refuse to eat, saying that they have no appetite or that they have already eaten and feel full. Mealtimes are also frequently skipped; but when they are forced and observed by others they will eat slowly and very slowly, to be able to hide the food or vomit it immediately.
It is important to monitor this behavior and not force them to eat, but teach them to eat healthily, perhaps the idea of taking them to a nutritionist will catch their attention, and thus they will feel safe when choosing a food. The fundamental thing is to realize that in this way you can ask for help.
2. They weigh themselves every so often
Every day and every moment, people with anorexia nervosa usually weigh themselves, the scale becomes their best friend or enemy because even if they see noticeable changes in the numbers indicated by the device, they will continue to believe that they are too fat.
In order to help them, the ideal would be not to have any scales at home, to prevent them from being weighed every so often.
3. They look in the mirror
Typically, women with anorexia will look in the mirror frequently, seeing themselves as fat and unattractive. They also often complain about their body and some parts that still have volume and body fat.
They are very self-critical and will always find flaws where there are none, despite people telling them they are thin, beautiful, pretty, and beautiful.
4. They show irritability
They usually present drastic and sudden mood swings. They are usually irritable and in a bad mood and any comments they receive will be taken very personally. As for their social relationships, these women prefer to be alone, they avoid living together because that means eating at meetings and that is the first thing they want to stop doing.
Even they feel watched all the time, criticized, and judged, so they avoid having social events or being surrounded by many people.
5. They are very sleepy or insomniac
Both cases can occur, as these women often stop eating suddenly, logically they will not have energy and will choose to sleep, they will say that they are very tired. Sometimes they will stop being interested in doing their homework because they would prefer to rest.
Now, on the other hand, they will also suffer from insomnia and will not be able to fall asleep easily, because their mind will be thinking about how bad they look and they will be remembering that they have to lose weight.
Unfortunately, many times this disorder can originate when people constantly receive negative criticism from their family, friends, or partner. Well, for them the opinion of their loved ones is very important because the only thing they really seek is to feel loved and accepted.
So stay alert and if you detect some physical and behavioral symptoms in one of your loved ones; Go immediately to a specialist, since the problem can become a tragedy.
