To get an idea of how popular the document was during the pandemic years, the National Institute of Information Technology (ITI) recorded, in June 2021, the issue of 626,000 ICP-Brasil digital certificates, a number that represents a high of 20% in relation to the same period of the previous year.

What is a digital certificate?
The digital certificate is a document that works through a pair of cryptographic keys that connect when activated, authenticating the user's identity in the virtual environment.
One of the keys is always generally accessible and can be shared and the other is private, personal, and non-transferable and must be kept safe at all times.
Due to the encryption technology that allows digital certificates to work, the document becomes very secure, since all transactions are now protected and encoded, and cannot be intercepted by third parties or used by malicious people.
There are digital certificates for individuals (e-CPF) and legal entities (e-CNPJ) and also those that can be used to issue electronic invoices (NF-e), commonly used in larger companies.
In addition to this differentiation, digital certificates are distinguished from each other by the type of media in which they are made available, which can be virtual or physical.
In the case of level A1 certifications, the key is made available virtually, being installed in the digital certificate repository of the operating system and browser of a device, such as a cell phone or computer.
The validity of the A1 digital certificates is up to 12 months and it is possible to request the renewal of the documentation after this period.
A3-level certifications, on the other hand, can be obtained in chip or token card format, which further increases their portability and versatility. In this case, the duration can be up to three years and it is also possible to renew the certificate after expiration.
Where to use a digital certificate?
As we said, the digital certificate is synonymous with practicality and security for those who adopt it to use the document on a daily basis.
After all, there are many activities that can be carried out using an appropriate digital certificate and, among them, we can mention:
Declaration of the Annual List of Social Information - RAIS (for companies with more than 11 employees);
Caged records (for companies with more than 20 employees);
The download of incoming invoices;
Access to government portals such as e-CAC, Conectividade Social ICP, and social;
Electronic notary services;
Participation in virtual auctions;
Remote signature of contracts;
Granting of powers of attorney online;
Among others.
How to request a digital certificate?
If you are interested and want to request your digital certificate, just look for a certifying and registration authority authorized by ITI, the company that will be responsible for issuing the document.
After choosing the issuing company, it is necessary to provide all the requested data and attend the videoconference that will be scheduled by the company, whose purpose is to confirm the information provided in the request for the document.
With the verification that everything is in order, you just need to choose the level of your certificate (A1 or A3), pay the informed fees, and wait for your document to be issued.
So, just follow the security recommendations and pay attention to the certification expiration date to be able to take advantage of all the practicality that a digital certificate offers for your daily life.
